Mainers woke up to a winter wonderland Friday morning, as a storm is predicted to dump up to half a foot of snow across the state.

The first big snowstorm of the year swept into the state Thursday evening. Bangor could get between 3 and 7 inches of sleet and snow between early Thursday night and Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service office in Caribou. Portland could get between 5 and 11 inches of sleet and snow.

But while school kids may be reveling in a snow day, Bangor’s public works employees were busy preparing to clear the streets. Check out these photos as they get the plows ready Thursday evening.
