In January, Bar Harbor became the latest town in Maine to ban the distribution of single-use plastic bags by local retailers.

The Mount Desert Island town joins a growing list of communities that have adopted such a measure. Plastic shopping bag restrictions also have been enacted in Bath, Blue Hill, Belfast, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Freeport, Kennebunk, Saco, South Portland, Topsham, York and Rockland, with Rockland’s ban scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2019.

Use the map below to see which towns in Maine have put restrictions on plastic bags. Towns with red markers have an outright ban, while towns with yellow markers charge fees for plastic bags. Towns with green markers have brought up a proposal to ban or charge for plastic bags, but currently have no measures in place.
