–Over the years, residents of Allagash have gotten accustomed to people with no connection to their community using the name of their town to market everything from beverages to boots. But word that a movie titled “Allagash” is about to start filming — not in Allagash, but in western Maine — may well be the straw that broke the moose’s back.
High school coach with 557 victories earns Maine Basketball Hall of Fame nod
–In his 42 years of coaching Maine girls varsity basketball, John Donato has compiled a 557-244 record with 11 regional titles and five state championships.
A patient group wants new owners for a troubled Maine hospital
–A Lakes Region citizens group critical of health care at Bridgton Hospital is asking municipal officials and residents to help it shift control of the hospital from parent Central Maine Healthcare to MaineHealth. The executive hired to improve Central Maine Healthcare’s fiscal condition said no one has made a formal offer to buy the hospital and that patient concerns will be addressed.
Downtown Bangor event space can’t open after city finds no fire sprinklers, disability access
–Top of the Nine was planning to hold a grand opening for its event space atop 9 Central St. in downtown Bangor on Thursday night. The partners behind the venture wanted to host arts and culture events in the space with a panoramic view of downtown Bangor. But the city found the property lacked the fire safety and accessibility features it needed to be able to host events.
How new rules to protect endangered whales could change Maine lobster fishing
–A consortium of Atlantic states fisheries managers is calling for broad changes to the gear lobstermen use, in an effort to reduce risks posed to the endangered North Atlantic right whale and to ward off potential federal action that could be even more challenging for the industry.
