Dow neast Audubon talk on ‘Wild Cats of Maine’
BLUE HILL — Downeast Audubon talk by Lynn Havsall on “Wild Cats of Maine” will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Blue Hill Public Library, Parker Point Road. Cat lovers may first think of the infamous Maine Coon, but our state is home to abundant bobcats, secretive Canada lynx and the elusive cougar, otherwise known as mountain lion, puma or panther, which has actually been spotted in our area. Learn the secrets of these fascinating felines and how to best find them by tracks, sign, smell and sound. Understanding their behavior will certainly increase your chances of spotting our native wild cats.
2019 Slim’s Fishing Derby to be held Feb. 16-17
ORLAND — The 2019 Slim’s Fishing Derby will be held 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16-17, in all legal waters in Hancock County. Weigh-in will be 3-5 p.m. for paid categories and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for kids at Toddy Pond boat ramp, 1117 Acadia Highway. Along with cash awards for largest fish, there will be a grand prize and numerous door prize drawings held throughout the event. Special this year is a 10th Anniversary prize package filled with ice fishing gear. Grand door prize is $1,000 cash. Other prizes are $250 for first and $50 for second in species categories of bass, brown trout, salmon, togue and splake paid ticket holders; free kids category for children under 12, grand prize lifetime fishing license and winner drawn from weighed perch or pickerel. Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife category of smallest two togue from Beech Hill, with ticket and registration required, $100. Entry fee $15. Cookbook talk and recipe tasting with Sarah Walker Caron
ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Public Library will host local cookbook author Sarah Walker Caron at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at 20 State Street. Caron will talk about her cookbooks, “The Super Easy 5-Ingredient Cookbook” and her new release, “The One-Pot Pasta Cookbook.” Caron is features senior editor at Bangor Daily News, Bangor Metro Magazine editor and editor of national website HelloHomestead.com. Samples of selected dishes from the books will be available for tasting. Copies of the books will be available for sale courtesy of The Briar Patch, located in Bangor, Maine, and a book signing will follow the presentation. The event is free and open to the public. ‘The Neighbors We Hardly Know’ owl talk with Craig Kesselheim
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The Southwest Harbor Public Library is holding an owl talk, “The Neighbors We Hardly Know,” at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at 338 Main Street. Learn which owls live here, and how to identify them. Explore owls’ many amazing adaptations and skills, while perhaps busting a few myths about this popular and elusive family of birds. Southwest Harbor resident Craig Kesselheim has been a passionate birder for 45 years and has birded on MDI for many of those.
Indigenous Film Festival Lead Up Series: ‘The Silent Enemy’
BAR HARBOR — The Abbe Museum will hold a viewing of “The Silent Enemy” from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at Reel Pizza Cinerama, 33 Kennebec Pl. The Abbe Museum education team and Reel Pizza Cinerama will show a series of Indigenous films as they gear up for the second annual Abbe Museum Indian Market Film Festival May 17-20. In the Canadian Northwest, the Chippewa tribe struggles to find food before the onset of winter. Chief Chetoga agrees with the hunter Baluk to move north toward the caribou herds, despite the protests of Dagwan, the medicine man. After the move, hunting proves unsuccessful, despite the numerous animals around them. Chetoga’s daughter, Neewa (Spotted Elk) mocks Baluk, but when Chetoga dies, he is made the new chief.
