BATH, Maine — Election officials in Bath set April 2 as the date for Ward Four voters to choose a new City Council member to fill the seat of longtime councilor Bernie Wyman, who died Jan. 28 while serving his 25th year on the council.
Also that day, Bath voters will elect a new District 52 member of the House of Representatives to fill the seat vacated earlier this month by Jennifer DeChant.
DeChant, a Democrat, resigned from the Legislature to take a private-sector job.
Two sitting city councilors, Chairwoman Mari Eosco and Vice Chairman Sean Paulhus, have declared they will each run for the Democratic nomination in the special election to replace DeChant.
Jason Savage, executive director of the Maine Republican Party, said last week that the party had no candidates yet.
No primary will take place. Instead, members of the Bath Republican and Democratic committees from District 52 will choose their nominees. Green Independent Party members in the district also could caucus to pick a nominee, and unenrolled voters could gain a spot on the ballot by submitting nomination papers with signatures of 50 valid voters before the nomination deadline set by the secretary of state.
Nomination papers for the Ward Four council seat — for a term to end in December 2021 — are available at the city clerk’s office until Feb. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
Papers can be filed with the city clerk’s office from Feb. 20 to March 1.
Voters will cast ballots at Bath Middle School, 6 Old Brunswick Road, in the cafeteria.
