Fourth-seeded Gray-New Gloucester High School weathered a tight first quarter to pull away from No. 5 Spruce Mountain, 45-34, in the boys’ Class B quarterfinal at the Portland Exposition Building Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots improve to 13-6 on the season, while the loss sends the Phoenix home for the season with a 14-5 record. Gray-New Gloucester now moves ahead to Thursday night’s semifinal round at the Cross Insurance Arena, also in Portland.
The Phoenix held a slim 9-7 advantage after a back-and-forth first quarter, but the Patriots held Spruce Mountain to a single point in the second quarter to sprint out to a 21-10 halftime lead and never look back, CBS 13 reported.
Gray-New Gloucester’s Hunter Colby and Zach Pomerleau led the effort to pull away, combining for 30 of the team’s 45 total points, according to Jeff Mannix of the sports talk radio station 96.3 FM, The Big Jab. Brandon Frey and Jack Bryant each scored nine points for Spruce Mountain, he wrote.
Gray-New Gloucester was ahead by a 31-15 score after three quarters.
