Future of salmon fishery

The recent release of the “Recovery Plan for the Gulf of Maine Distinct Population Segment of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)” by NOAA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife has created some buzz in the media, including two informative columns in the Bangor Daily News by John Holyoke. I have only skimmed parts of the plan, but my suggestion places the plan in broader perspective.

Before adopting a 75-year plan calling for annual expenditures of $24 million, all stakeholders in the plan, persons interested in the future of diadromous fishes in Maine, and citizens concerned with effects of climate change in the Gulf of Maine and coastal regions should attend “ Gulf of Maine 2050 – International Symposium,” Nov. 4-8, in Portland. Before we look 75 years out, let’s look 30 years out for a perspective on Atlantic salmon recovery.

Summer concert suggestion

How lucky we are to have a beautiful space such as Pickering Square. It is a space made for outdoor concerts and nighttime movies. I would urge the City of Bangor to continue Cool Sounds Summer Concerts and even add more dates.

These are community events that are well attended by some of our most needy citizens. I have gone for years and have seen many parents with children in wheelchairs. And many families with small children. And needy adults, some come in vans. And of course many senior citizens.

These are folks who would not be able to go to the Waterfront Concerts. The library does their best, but there is no room for dancing or children running about.

There are so many music groups that people love — The Bangor Band, the Steel Drum Band, RetroRockerz and so on.

Accolades, not cancellations for Non Sequitur

I am vehemently stating my objection to your cancellation of Wiley Miller’s “Non Sequitur” because of an offensive word somehow overlooked by BDN proofreaders.

The situation was made cause celebre by the very people who cheer as reporters are physically attacked at Trump rallies. To abrogate a man’s career over one word while ostentatiously printing venomous words meant to incite hatred and violence, is hypocrisy.

While Trump blithely dehumanizes America’s character daily, you’d castigate someone who brings Americans laughter, compassion, love, and brilliance. Mr. Miller’s subtle wink is for everyone being driven mad by this administration. He deserves accolades, not cancellations.

Canceling “Non Sequitur,” a champion for smart, caring, and involved readers, does a great disservice to the public. This strip mercifully prevents our hair from bursting into flames from the news. “Non Sequitur” shows us we are heard, understood, and not alone. You cannot simply abolish Mr. Miller when daily we see the second and third chances you give people far less deserving. To do otherwise is an injustice to your readers.

My BDN subscription ends March 31. I will re-subscribe when “Non Sequitur” is restored.

Emergency on the links

Wow. Am I to understand that our stable genius of a president just wrapped up three days of golfing in Florida — immediately after declaring a national emergency?
