A local woman was struck and killed Tuesday morning in Southwest Harbor by a large truck as she was walking through a parking lot, according to police.

The tractor-trailer, a 2013 Freightliner, was turning right onto Village Green Way from a parking area beside the local library when the incident occurred a few minutes before 9 a.m., according to the Southwest Harbor Police Department. The woman, who was 89, fell as she was walking toward the truck and then was struck by the tractor’s rear passenger-side tires.

Neither the woman’s name nor the name of the driver, a 56-year-old man from Bangor, had been released Tuesday afternoon as police still were trying to notify their families, said Chief Alan Brown of the Southwest Harbor police.

The woman was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she died of her injuries, police said.
