I learned during an AARP Maine meeting that there is now an alternative way for Mainers who own their own home to pay their ever rising property taxes, a municipal tax deferral plan. The idea is to use the equity in a person’s home to pay property taxes with repayment coming due when the property no longer serves as a home to that person or family.

The administration of the program is being done as a partnership between the state and towns and cities. People can apply either on the state of Maine website or at their town or city office. People can also call with questions about this program or to request an application to participate in the program.
