A piece of history in Skowhegan is soon to be just that — history.
After 70 years in operation, the Skowhegan Drive-In is closing for good this weekend, and it’s going out with a bang with classics.
The line-up on Friday is the original “War of the Worlds” from 1953. It will be shown at 8 p.m.
Following that, Alfred Hitchcock’s all time classic “Psycho” and “The Perfect Storm” wraps up the night.
On Saturday, the show begins with “Smokey and the Bandit” at 7 p.m. followed by “The Shining.”
“Twister” will be the final film ever shown at the drive-in.
“The decision to sell the facility arose from numerous considerations over an extended period of time. There was not one single factor that led to this decision … Super heroes, sequels, smoking bans, and streaming combined to reduce the appeal of the Skowhegan Drive-In Theatre. In the digital era, the Skowhegan Drive-In Theatre was an endearing institution that was no longer relevant. It was out of place, and it ran out of time,” Skowhegan Drive-In said in a Facebook post.
