Officials will not press charges in the case of an envelope containing white powder discovered at a state government office on Tuesday.

The powdery substance was found in an envelope being processed in an office for the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions on the fourth floor of the Cross Building in Augusta. The floor was evacuated temporarily, but the building remained open.

Tests of the powder conducted on site came back negative, according to state police. An investigation by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Enforcement Division concluded that “it does not appear to have been an intentional act and no charges will be filed,” Emily Cook, spokesperson for the Maine secretary of state’s office said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Cook declined to give additional details about how white powder accidentally got into an envelope at a state government building, citing the need to “protect our safety and security procedures.”
