A 50-year-old man whose boat overturned on Sunday off the coast of St. George is recovering after being rescued.
First responders got a call around 4:45 pm Sunday after the man failed to arrive back on land when expected, according to the Maine Department of Marine Resources. The man, whom the agency didn’t identify, had been attempting to locate parts of a private dock that had washed away during recent storms.
A few minutes later, another call came from an area resident to report that a man could be heard yelling for help near the islands off Tenants Harbor. His small skiff had overturned near Northern Island and he was able to swim ashore, according to the Department of Marine Resources.
Maine Marine Patrol along with other local fire and rescue agencies responded and rescued the man. Crews brought him to shore just before 8 p.m.
When he was found, the man was conscious but unable to move. He was transported off the island by a Department of Marine Resources small boat, transferred to a U.S. Coast Guard vessel and taken by ambulance to a hospital to be treated for low body temperature.
