I am writing in regards to the report of the proposed offshore wind port project on Sears Island. I want to start off by saying that I hope the BDN is inundated with emails similar to mine, from all those opposed to this project. I think it is both appalling and disgraceful that our governor (whom I have always supported), has chosen our state’s beloved Sears Island. I believe the ecological and economic impact on this region will be detrimental. This island is an attraction visited by so many people who, like me, also are patrons at the local shops, the flea markets, and the convenience store.
My family and I have spent decades going to Sears Island. We have enjoyed the trails and woods of the island, the beaches and water where my children grew up playing, exploring and digging clams on the mud flats. This project could destroy this beautiful place that has been here for millennia, a place that has such historical indigenous value. We as Mainers cannot allow this to happen for something labeled as an “experimental” project. Especially when there are other options available.
This beautiful place belongs to us all, every single person in this great state of Maine. Even if they have never been there. What a shame if they never could. We must not allow this to happen.
I want to end by stating that I, like many others, am not opposed to wind energy. It is important that we find new clean renewable energy, but absolutely not at the cost of destroying one of our state’s greatest treasures.
