Three people have applied for the interim superintendent of Hermon School Department, and a fourth person may submit an application, according to the search firm the school hired.
The chosen candidate will work for up to a year after hiring, replacing Superintendent Micah Grant who resigned April 1. Grant will leave at the end of the school year in mid-June.
A full time superintendent will be hired at a later date, the school committee said previously.
The Maine School Management Association has received three applications for the position as of Monday, Deputy Executive Director Eileen King said. Interviews will likely happen May 9, Chairwoman Stephanie Oiler said.
Committee members discussed what they want in the interim superintendent and the timeline for interviews and hiring during a special meeting Monday night. Communication, passion for students, calm under pressure and neutral leadership were among qualities brought up by members, Oiler said.
Committee members involved in the hiring process also had confidentiality training. Oiler, Jesse Keith, Brian Veneziano and Haily Keezer attended the training, which was mandatory for committee members who want to help with the search process.
The committee must keep all candidates confidential, even after the search is over, according to state law, King said.
The committee members discussed how they would keep the candidates confidential while having the mandatory public comment time before the meeting because they would have a quorum. Veneziano and Oiler talked about starting the meeting early, accepting public comment, going into executive session and then moving to a different location.
One member of the public spoke during the open comment time at the meeting, speaking about the importance of keeping the candidates confidential, even from other candidates.
A Penobscot County Sheriff’s deputy was monitoring the meeting in-person.
