AUGUSTA, Maine — The Hampden Academy girls basketball team outlasted the Camden Hills Windjammers 59-52 in a double overtime Class A North regional championship at the Augusta Civic Center on Friday night.

Hampden sophomore guard Katelyn Adams scored six points in the overtime periods, including a 3-pointer from the right wing that gave the Broncos a 49-46 lead with 3:12 left in the second OT.

After Camden Hills sophomore guard Thea Laukka responded with a driving layup to pull the Windjammers within one, Adams found teammate Eve Wiles with a backdoor pass that resulted in an easy layup giving the Broncos a 51-48 lead at the 2:12 mark.

Camden Hills missed and Hampden senior forward Caitlin Murphy was fouled and hit two free throws to make it 53-48.

The Windjammers’ Maren Johnson drove for a layup that cut the lead to 53-50 with 1:20 in double OT.

After a Hampden timeout, Adams hit junior forward Grace LaBree with a perfect pass underneath that she converted to make it 55-50 with 53 seconds left.

Hampden’s defense and 4-of-6 foul shooting down the stretch sealed the outcome.

Wiles finished with a game-high 19 points for Hampden. Murphy finished with 13.

Camden Hills (15-7) was led by Laukka’s 18-point effort. Senior forward River Bell finished with 10 points.

The Hampden girls move on to play in the Class A state championship on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Augusta Civic Center. That game will be at 6 p.m. and the Broncos will play Mt. Ararat of Topsham for the state title. Hampden is the No. 3 team in Class A North and Mt. Ararat is the No. 1 team in Class A South.
