The rainbow flag on a downtown Bangor street has been defaced a second time, less than two days after it was last repainted for this year’s Pride month.
Tire marks were left on the flag sometime Wednesday night, a Bangor Daily News reporter observed. The flag was painted on May 27 this year and repainted by city public works employees Tuesday after being defaced the first time Monday.
The flag is painted near a crosswalk on State Street every year to commemorate LGBTQ+ Pride month in June. It stretches across the street near where three teenagers killed Charlie Howard in 1984 for being openly gay.
It’s unclear if the city intends to repaint the flag a third time. City spokesperson David Warren did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This year’s Pride parade and festival is planned for June 27.
