A New Hampshire man was arrested Thursday in the 1993 killing of a Kittery woman.
Daniel Jolly, 59, of Portsmouth has been charged with murder in the death of 73-year-old Maxine Bitomski, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Family members found Bitomski dead in her Colonial Road home about 3:14 p.m. on Jan. 16, 1993.
The Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta ruled her death a homicide. Moss said Thursday morning that Bitomski’s cause of death isn’t being made public right now.
Jolly apparently knew Bitomski through his job at Medical Market, a Portsmouth-based supply company that provided oxygen equipment and services to her, according to Moss.
Detectives began reexamining her case in 2021, and advances in DNA testing ultimately led to Jolly’s arrest at 6:13 a.m. in Portsmouth.
He was taken to the Rockingham County Jail, where he awaits extradition to Maine.
“This arrest reflects the determination and commitment of investigators who never stopped working this case,” said Lt. Tom Pickering, who oversees the Maine State Police’s cold case squad. “The work completed by current and retired Maine State Police Detectives, members of the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory and the Kittery Police Department over the past 33 years was instrumental in bringing this case to this point.”
