The body of a man who went missing in a Rockland lake was recovered Sunday night by a state dive team.

The Maine Warden Service located Timothy Payson, 59, of Rockland, in approximately 15 feet of water in Chickawaukie Lake at around 10:20 p.m. Sunday night, according to Mark Latti, spokesperson for the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Payson had gone missing when he went out for a boat ride Sunday morning on the lake.

At approximately 8 a.m. Sunday, a Rockland man was at home when heard another man, believed to be Payson, yelling for help from the water. He ran down over the bank to help Payson while his wife called 911, Latti said.

When he got to the water, a small Zodiac style boat with a dog in it was motoring in circles in the water, but he could not see anyone in the boat or in the water. Rockland and Rockport fire departments arrived and managed to board the moving boat and turn it off, but could not find the operator of the boat.

More information will be released as it becomes available, he said.
