The body of a man was recovered Thursday afternoon.
Two men were later detained as part of the investigation.
The Maine Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard responded at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18 to the report of a person in the water near Hurricane Sound off Vinalhaven. A Good Samaritan recovered the body of Marshal Ames, 57, of North Haven. The Good Samaritan performed CPR.
The two agencies and Vinalhaven emergency medical services responded to the boat that recovered the body and brought him to Dyer Island. Ames was declared dead at the scene by EMS, according to the Marine Patrol.
Ames had fallen off the fishing vessel Long Faces.
The Marine Patrol detained two people and brought them to the Knox County holding facility in Rockland.
Geoffrey Barrett, 39, of North Haven, was charged with felony operating a watercraft while under the influence, misdemeanor assault, and refusing to submit to arrest or detention. Barrett is captain of the fishing vessel that Ames fell from, according to the Maine Marine Patrol. Barrett refused to take a chemical test, Maine Patrol said.
Theodore Lane, 27, of North Haven, was charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
Both were later released on bail. Barrett was released on $500 cash bail. Lane was released on $500 unsecured bail.
