Maine Democrats apparently finally found their red line with Graham Platner, which seemingly means everything before it was something they could live with. Including an SS tattoo.
When his ink came to light, his support didn’t waver and the yard signs continued to go up across our towns. He won the primary in record numbers. A Nazi insignia on a U.S. Senate candidate’s chest, and the response from his party, his endorsers, and our own neighbors was essentially a shrug.
I don’t much care what he claims he knew. What I can’t accept is how little it cost him and how easily the people around me decided a Nazi symbol wasn’t worth walking away from, wasn’t worth so much as a pause.
Jewish Mainers watched all of it. We saw exactly how comfortable our neighbors were with that hateful image. We know now what we are worth here.
