Former Maine police officer indicted on theft charge

A former Scarborough police lieutenant has been accused of theft.

Timothy Barker, 55, has been indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on a Class B theft charge, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Class B theft involves either stolen goods valued at $10,000 or more, stolen guns or explosives, or a suspect armed at the time of the theft, the newspaper reported.

Scarborough police informed the Maine attorney general’s office in December of the alleged theft, and Barker retired on Feb. 2 after 31 years with the department, according to the Press Herald.

It’s not known whether the alleged theft involved town property.

If convicted, Barker faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $20,000.
