FARMINGTON — Trinity Slate, a University of Maine at Farmington anthropology and political science major from North Anson has been awarded the Ina Rosenthal-Urey mentorship award by the American Anthropological Association.

This prestigious award pairs undergraduate anthropology majors with mentors from both academia and professionals in the field. Slate will meet with their mentors multiple times during the academic year as they support them in learning about their educational and career options after graduation. This award was established by a gift from Elizabeth Briody and Marc Robinson.

“I am so honored to receive this award,” Slate said. “Professor Kellett encouraged me to apply for it and this professional mentorship will be so helpful in the advancement of my career. From my first year at UMF, my professors have been both accessible and supportive and provided me with a robust educational experience.”

In addition to the AAA award, Slate has also been named the 2026-27 Maine Policy Scholar for UMF — a program created to engage students from the University of Maine System in the public policy process. Scholars conduct extensive research on a topic during the academic year and provide a final report as a memo to the governor with recommended policy solutions.

Slate is currently serving a GIS related internship helping to create a map for the Maine Trails Program.

“During their time at UMF, Trinity has demonstrated perseverance and taken advantage of opportunities that have come their way which has rewarded them in spades,” Nicole Kellett, UMF professor of anthropology, said. “This award provides Trinity access to mentors who work within the field of applied anthropology. They will help Trin learn how to bring the theories and methodologies of anthropology to impact political policies for effective social change.  It has been an honor to work with Trin and I am excited to see what the future holds for them.”
