It’s no secret that life has become less affordable. Everything from gas to health care, groceries, housing and beyond are stretching Maine families’ budgets. The reality is that rising costs are putting real financial pressure on families across Maine.
That’s why Bangor Daily News reporters are pursuing stories daily about making ends meet for families, businesses and nonprofits — and efforts to bring costs down. We are also partnering with Maine Community Action Partnership, a network of independent community action agencies that work to eliminate poverty in Maine through agency programs like Head Start, energy assistance and weatherization, transportation services and beyond.
For me, this is also about the role we believe the BDN should play in the communities we serve. Our responsibility goes beyond reporting on the challenges facing Maine people. When we have an opportunity to bring people together, support organizations doing important work and help strengthen our communities in a tangible way, I believe we should.
Next week BDN and MeCAP are co-hosting an important event to inform and inspire you about challenges to affordability in Maine: “Showing Up for Maine Together” at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Bangor is a benefit cocktail reception featuring a conversation about affordability challenges and solutions with Homeworthy Executive Director Molly Feeney and Maine Council on Aging Executive Director Jess Maurer, moderated by BDN Executive Editor Dan MacLeod.
