I have recently read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s excellent book “An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s.” I want to highlight a quote used in an address by Goodwin’s husband Dick delivered on Sept. 17,1966, before a luncheon of the national board of the Americans for Democratic Action in which he publicly broke with the Johnson administration over the Vietnam war. Dick Goodwin was an advisor and speechwriter for both President John F. Kennedy and President Lyndon Johnson.
This quote seems particularly pertinent in today’s environment. “It is not our privilege but our duty as patriots, to write, to speak, to organize, to oppose any president and any party and any policy at any time which we believe threatens the grandeur of this nation and the well-being of its people. This is such a time.”
