BANGOR — Northern Light Health Mobile Mammography will bring its traveling unit to the Bangor Pride Festival on the Bangor Waterfront on Saturday, June 27. Using the latest 3D technology, the team will offer walk-in screening mammograms from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals who are due or overdue for a mammogram can stop by and get a screening mammogram during the event. An order from a provider is not needed for breast cancer preventive screenings, which take about 20 minutes.
Statistics show that one in eight women in the US will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, but when caught early before it spreads, more than 99% of patients survive the diagnosis.
“An annual screening mammogram is the most accurate tool we have to detect cancer early, oftentimes even before you can feel a change,” Cat Schureman, MSN, RN, director, Breast and Infusion Services, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, said. “All bodies are different, and getting a mammogram beginning at age 40 can help establish a baseline of what is normal for each person’s breasts.”
“At Northern Light Health, we are committed to caring for all patients with respect and understanding,” Schureman said. The Mobile Mammography team is staffed by professionals who are eager to make folks feel as comfortable as possible, answering questions and addressing concerns about screening mammograms. “We know some individuals struggle with feeling seen and heard when accessing healthcare. Bringing the mobile unit to Pride may increase options for those in need of this lifesaving screening.”
Northern Light Health Medical Transport and Community Volunteer Impact Teams will be participating in the parade and staffing a booth with health information.
