EASTPORT – Agnes M. Burgess, 106, passed away Feb. 7, 2004, at an Eastport nursing home. She was born March 10, 1897, at Round Pond, Township of Bristol, the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Chester Freeman Butterfield. She graduated as salutatorian in the class of 1925 from Boynton High School in Eastport. She studied music for three years at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass. She taught piano, voice and glee club in private schools in Maine before marriage. In 1922, at Brewer, she married Rev. Roy Burgess of Plymouth, Mass., a graduate of Bangor Theological Seminary, who later earned degrees from both Dartmouth College and Bates College. They lived for 17 years in Freehold, N.J., where Mr. Burgess taught history and debate in the high school. They returned to Maine in 1945, to work in the Ministry and teaching until retirement. Mrs. Burgess assisted her husband in the music of the churches and schools and had many piano pupils. The couple celebrated their Golden wedding on July 14, 1972, at their home in Eastport, amid friends and relatives. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mary Gebo of Eastport; five grandchildren, Cara, Dona and Celia Boers, Michael of East Machias, Michele of Woodland; several great-grandchildren. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at the Flagg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in the spring. Donations in her memory may be made to the Central Congregational Church or the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home.
