HANCOCK – Alice M. Bowden, 83, of Ellsworth, died Oct. 13, 2003, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Augusta, Sept. 5, 1920, the daughter of Charles T. and Bertha M. Storey Hayes Sr. She graduated from Cony High School, Class of 1939. She took many educational correspondence courses and government courses, at the University of Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. She married Hazelton E. Bowden in Bucksport, July 23, 1939. Mr. Bowden died Oct. 10, 1983. Mrs. Bowden worked as an administrative assistant at Acadia National Park, retiring in 1967. Mr. and Mrs. Bowden lived in many locations in Maine during his teaching career. During World War II, she worked as a shipfitter helper at New England Shipbuilders Corporation. She lived in Hancock for 20 years, Freeport for 12 years and moved back to Hancock, where she resided since then. Mrs. Bowden was a lapidarist. She was a member of the Lions, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens and St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church. She is survived by two sons, Dennis R. of Stockton Springs and Phillip H. of Hancock; three daughters, Lorelei H. Lowell of Pownal, Darlene J. Thomas of Hancock and Paula D. Bowden of Blue Hill; a brother, Theodore R. Hayes of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Dorothea Hamlin of Dresden and Corrus Paradis of West Peru; 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, David D. Bowden, who passed away in 1946. Friends and family are invited to visit from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, State Street, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Christopher Chornyak officiating. Interment will be in Castine.
