SAN DIEGO – Allen Burton Hawes, 57, died last week in San Diego, as the result of a vicious homicide. Allen was born July 7, 1949, in Waterville, a son of Carl and Bertha (Newcomb) Hawes. Allen was orphaned at an early age, his mother having died when he was six. He attended school in Winslow and went to live with his grandparents in Newport, after the death of his father. Allen departed Maine for New York and returned to Maine briefly in 1972. He then left again for New York City and lived in and around Greenwich Village for several years. He began a life that eventually led him to California nearly 20 years ago. During these years, he kept to himself with no outreach to family. After searching for him in 2000, his niece located him. Allen was a kind and gentle person with strong values and seemingly no addictions. His simple pleasures were collecting Red Sox memorabilia and his joy of writing and receiving letters. Allen is survived by one brother, Lowell Hawes of Augusta; two nieces, a nephew, an aunt and several cousins. A spring burial and service will be held at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville. Arrangements are with Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.
