BELFAST – Alma (Colby) Birmingham, 88, died peacefully, Dec. 19, 2006, surrounded by her family at a Belfast health care center. She was born Dec. 7, 1918, in Little rock, Ark., the beloved daughter of Wilbur and Eleanor (Bartlett) Colby. Alma was a third generation resident of Belfast and attended Belfast schools, graduating from Crosby High School, Class of 1936. In her youth she was an accomplished pianist, playing with choir groups, recitals and class ode at her graduation, and eventually at class reunions. Alma served as ward clerk for 25 years for the City of Belfast. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where she served in various areas of church life, including the Ladies Guild. She will be especially remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, “nanny” and great-grandmother. Surviving are three sons, Wilbur and his wife, Sylvia, of Rockland, Thomas and his wife, Angela, of Windsor and John and his wife, Pagan, of Old Town; nine grandchildren, Robert, Beth, Suzanne, Brandi, Brooke, Joshua, Erin, Heather and Michelle; nine great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leo, in 1982; and a daughter, Anne, in 1947. Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish Center, 81 Court St., Belfast, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Khoury, pastor, celebrant. Burial will be at Grove Cemetery, Belfast.
