STOCKHOLM – Alton L. Ward- well, 84, met his Lord and Savior, Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007. Alton was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Perham, the only child to Walter and Etta (Wright) Wardwell. He attended Perham, Caribou and Stockholm schools. He graduated from Ricker School, Houlton, in 1941. He worked for a short time in Worcester, Mass., before returning to Stockholm to work with his father on the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad. He worked on the B&A Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 1983. After retiring, Alton and Margaret did missionary trips to Mexico through the Mexican Medical Hospital, helping to build clinics in several Mexico towns. On Oct. 24, 1946, he married the love of his life, Margaret Quist. He served in the Stockholm Baptist Church as a deacon for many years. He help found and build the Christian Service Brigade in 1966. He lead numerous trips to Mount Katahdin, Allagash, the St. John River, the White Mountains, Nova Scotia, and Quebec. Boys were also able to experience God’s creation through deep-sea fishing, and bike trips. He also ran two Casco Bay Marathons. Alton always supported his family, traveling anywhere to watch them participate in any activity, especially, watching his son, Greg, run and ski. The outdoors was his life. He exposed his family and his grandchildren to this love of life in the outdoors. He is survived by his wife, of 60 years, Margaret (Quist); daughters, Lois and husband, James Knight, of North Yarmouth, Carol and husband, John Hanley, of Raymond, Elaine and husband, Steve York, of Windham; son, Gregory and wife, Beverly, of Wylie Texas; grandchildren, Mark York and wife, Megan, of Windham, Ian Hanley of Raymond, Lena and Jonathan Wardwell of Wylie, Texas. The family expresses their sincerest thanks to Dr. Carl Flynn and to the staff at the Caribou Nursing Home for all the care given to Alton. Friends and relatives are invited to call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou. A celebration of Alton’s life will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at First Baptist Church, Stockholm. Burial will be at Stockholm Cemetery.
