ENFIELD and SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Amelia Shedd passed away Oct. 1, 2007, after a brief illness. She was born June 6, 1912, in Eagle Lake, the daughter of the late Joseph and Julia Pelkey. Amelia grew up in Eagle Lake, where she attended Convent. Later, she worked in the post office and specialty mills, making bowling pins and clothes pins, where she was a supervisor. One day a handsome gentleman named John applied for a job. She decided he would be too much of a distraction so she did not hire him. But later she softened and hired him. They loved music and loved to dance. He swept her off her feet and they were married. During World War II, Amelia and John worked as machinists in the Portland Shipyard, building Liberty Ships. She was so proud to be honored to go on “sea trials” on the new ships. After the war, they moved back to Mattawamkeag, Lincoln and Bangor. Because John worked for the U.S. Air Force, they moved from Bangor to Plattsburg, N.Y., and Boston. When he retired, they returned to their beloved Cold Stream Pond, Enfield. They spent their winters in Seal Beach, Calif., and the rest of the year at the lake. She was active in the Eastern Star, Grange and Congregational Church of Lincoln and Bangor. She was predeceased by her husband, John Shedd Sr.; her brothers, Jimmy, Leonard, Alfred and Willard; her sisters, Lena and Julia; and her daughter, Helen Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Freida Spitz of Exeter, R.I.; son, John Shedd Jr. and wife, Pat, of Rossmoor, Calif., and Enfield; grandchildren, Jo Ann, James, Stephen, Scott and Tracey; great-grandchildren, Holley, Matthew, Brittany, Colin, Derec and Branden; and great-great-grandchildren, Devin and Ares. A celebration of her life and interment was held Oct. 6, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Cypress, Calif. She was a ray of sunshine and an inspiration for all who knew her. She will be in our memories forever.
