LINCOLNVILLE – Ann Hart Dickens, 87, died Dec. 15, 2006, at the Maine Veterans’ Homes, Bangor. She was born in 1919, in South Hope, the daughter of Halver A. Hart and Hazel Annis Hart. She was one of seven children, attended a one room rural school in South Hope, graduated from Union High in 1936 and from the University of Maine – Orono, in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She graduated from the Mass General Hospital School of Nursing, with a registered nurse degree in 1944, after which she served in Army Nurse Corp with the 221st General Hospital, in England and France, during World War II. Upon returning to the United States, she finished graduate courses in public health nursing and then worked as a public health nurse in Augusta and in Washington and Waldo counties. Later, she worked as a secretary for the North Maine Woods Corp., Presque Isle. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and Chi Omega sorority; Highland Avenue Methodist Church, Gardiner, Girl Scout leader, Maine Nurses Association, Friends of Maine State Parks, volunteer at Camden Healthcare Center; a member of Hope Historical Society, Hope Extension, Friends of Bangor Public Library, Bangor-Brewer Widows Group, Bangor Women’s Christian Association, University of Maine Alumni Association and the Bangor Historical Society. Ann loved her children, her home and her family. Her interests outside her home include genealogy, history, sports, gardening and traveling. She also enjoyed knitting and swimming, at the Y and at camp, boat rides on Megunticook Lake and her exercise class in Brewer. She was writing and receiving e-mail right up until her illness in September. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 44 years, Thomas D. Dickens, in 1992. She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Dickens McLean and her husband, Christopher, of Winterport; her daughter, Susan Dickens Burgess and husband, John, of Newport; her son, Thomas Lee Dickens and his wife, Charlyn, of Lincolnville; six grandchildren, Sarah McLean Adams and her husband, Michael, of Edwardsville, Ill.; Kate Burgess and her significant other, John Rush, of Newport, Mark McLean and his wife, Stephanie, of Carmel, Emily Burgess Parker and her husband, Ryan, of Winterport, Daniel Burgess of Allston, Mass., Thomas C. Dickens of Lincolnville; three great-grandchildren, Michael and Allison Adams of Edwardsville, Ill., and Michael McLean of Carmel. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Louise Dickens Lambert of Camden; and by her brother, Halver “Skipper” Hart and his wife, Ollie, of Nobleboro. A gathering for family and friends will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the United Christian Church, Lincolnville Center. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to the Hope Extension College Scholarship Fund, care of Ann Leadbetter, 319 Ludwig Road, Hope, ME 04847. Spring interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Camden. The family is planning a private gathering at a time when her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren can come together at her home on Megunticook Lake. Arrangements are with Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden.
