EAST MACHIAS – Arlene Mary (Pease) Smith, 65, died at home, Nov. 11, 2004, after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) surrounded by her caregivers, family, and friends. She was born Sept. 11, 1939, in Farmington, the daughter of the late Ray Noland and Emily Arlene (Parsons) Pease. Arlene grew up in North New Portland. She was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1957, and attended Husson College for two years before marrying Odber D. Smith Jr. in November of 1961. Arlene enjoyed working at the University of Maine Machias (UMM) bookstore for 23 years. Her coworkers and students at the University brought her great joy through the years. Arlene loved gardening and bird watching. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Julie Audie and husband, Benard, of Biddeford; two beloved granddaughters, Emily and Elizabeth; brother, Ray Albert Pease and wife, Betty, of Phillips; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, many friends, and a special soulmate who she loved most of her life. Arlene also leaves behind her extended family of caregivers and hospice workers whose special care allowed her to remain at home until her death. The family is deeply grateful for their kindness and compassion. She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Odber D. Smith Jr., April 2, 1997. Visiting hours will take place from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 6 Cooper St., Machias. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Marty Shaw. Burial will be at the North Cemetery in North New Portland, 3 p.m. Monday.
