EAST ORLAND – Arthur Charles Wight, 90, died Nov. 19, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 12, 1916, in Berlin, N.H., the middle child of 13, to Arthur A. and Margaret I. (Hachey) Wight. Arthur moved to Bucksport in 1931 from Berlin, N.H., and entered the U.S. Army in 1941, serving in World War II in the 36th Field Artillery Battalion under the command of Gen. George S. Patton. He saw combat in North Africa, Italy, and Germany. Arthur was very proud of his service during the war and considered it probably the most significant thing he did in his life. He returned to Bucksport after the war and worked at St. Regis/Champion Paper Co., retiring in 1978 after 42 years of service. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard along with his late wife, Laura, during the winters in Florida. Arthur is survived by his son, Greg Wight and his wife, Beth, of East Orland; sister, Barbara Wentworth and her husband, Charlie, of Bucksport; granddaughters, Kathleen Wight of Bangor, Erin Wight of Aomori, Japan, and Hayley Wight of Brunswick; brothers-in-law, Alfred Eastman of Bucksport and Harold Ellis and his wife, Doris, of East Orland; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Laura (Ellis) Wight; brothers and sisters, Hazel Goudreau of Bucksport, Alberta St. John of South Portland, Pauline Eastman of Bucksport, June Dorion of Bucksport, Doris Calvert of Portland, Michael Wight of Homer, N.Y., Kenneth Wight of Versailles, Ky., Alton Wight of Searsport, Linwood Wight of Berlin, N.H., and Cornelius Wight of Loggyville, New Brunswick, both who died young. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport with the Rev. Dr. Rex Garrett, director of chaplaincy services at Eastern Maine Medical Center, officiating. Interment will be at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
