MANCHESTER, N.H. and EAST MILLINOCKET – Arthur Boss Jr., 75, was called home to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, having experienced some heart problems in the spring. Arthur was born Aug. 14, 1930, in Millinocket, the oldest son of Arthur R. Sr. and Helen (Sickles) Boss. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Alice “Tillie” (Dyer) Boss. The loss of his life’s partner was something he never truly recovered from. He is survived by three sons, Louis Edward Boss of Albuquerque, N.M., Donald and Eloise Boss of Fremont, N.H. and Jerre and Louisa Boss of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Lawrence and Marion Boss of East Millinocket and Ralph and Doris Boss of Lincoln; six grandchildren, Chris, Julie, Michelle, Sarah, Anna and Adam; and great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Arthur started working for the Great Northern Paper Company poling wood in the grinding room at the age of 16 and worked his way up to the boiler room in 1955. He became head fireman in 1967 and finally retired on Jan. 1, 1987. He loved to tell stories about his escapades, many of which involved the men he worked with during his 41 years in the mill. He enjoyed the many vehicles and motorcycles that he owned, and was a fan of NASCAR. In 1989, Arthur and Tillie moved to New Hampshire and became involved in the lives of their granddaughters there. Years of following sports teams have made Arthur a much-loved “Grampy” to many families in the seacoast area. He will be missed seen sitting in his chair at the softball field with his pipe or in his “spot” on the bleachers in the gymnasium. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and had a warm, giving soul. He was a great man. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at the First Congregational Church in East Millinocket and a service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Andrew MacLeod officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Aruthur’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086 or online at www.cancer.org, or to a charity of your choosing.
