MILLINOCKET and RUMFORD – Augustino C. “Gus” DiFrederico, 89, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at a Lewiston hospital. He was born Dec. 16, 1918, in Millinocket, the son of Luigi and Annita (Buccione) DiFrederico. Gus was educated in Millinocket schools, graduating from Stearns High School, Class of 1936. For a brief time, he worked at Pratt & Whitney, Connecticut, and then served in the U.S. Army, as an infantryman during World War II. A Purple Heart recipient, he was injured in combat in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, Gus returned to Millinocket, where he owned and operated DiFrederico Insurance Agency for many years. During that time, Gus also served on Millinocket Town Council. After retiring from the insurance business, he became the tax assessor for the town of Millinocket, a post he held for more than 10 years. Gus was a 4th Degree member of St. Martin of Tours Council No. 680, Knights of Columbus, as well as B.P.O. Elks No. 1521, Donald V. Henry Post No. 80, American Legion, Frances Elliott Post No. 4154 VFW, and a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Millinocket. He enjoyed spending time at camp, playing cards and watching dog races. Gus is survived by his wife, Cornelia (Breitmoser) DiFrederico of Rumford; a son, Carl DiFrederico and his wife, Barbara, of Millinocket; a daughter, JoAnn MacDougall and her husband, Wayne, of Rumford; four grandchildren, Louis DiFrederio of Millinocket, Kerry Lynn of North Conway, N.H., Katherine Oldakowski of Orlando, Fla., and Darcy Blythman of Plantation, Fla.; eight great-grandchildren, Celia, Nathaniel, Avery, Will, Jack, Molly, Eva and Lilah; siblings, Mario DiFrederico and Antoinette DiFrederico; a sister-in-law, Pat-ricia DiFrederico; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Arlene (Hunter) DiFrederico; and two brothers, Anthony and James DiFrederico. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, where the officers and members of St. Martin’s Council No. 680, Knights of Columbus will conduct a prayer service 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 112 Maine Ave., Millinocket. Interment with military honors will be held after the service at Millinocket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Gus may be sent to James R.
