BREWER – Benjamin LaFever passed away Oct. 17, 2007. He was born March 22, 1924, in Chandler, Ariz., the only child of William LaFever and Susie (Golden) LaFever. He graduated from Chandler High School. He then attended Arizona State University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, in which he served honorably during World War II. He married Audrey DeMastus, July 15, 1952, in Las Cruces, N.M. He served in the U.S. Border Patrol at various stations in southern New Mexico and Arizona. He was an avid and competitive golfer, and championship bowler. He and Audrey moved to Maine in 2002 to be near their daughter. Ben came to love Maine because of the friendliness of its people and the beauty of its environment. Ben was a privileged member of the Brewer coffee gang, who were according to Ben and Audrey, “the best friends we ever had.” Ben and Audrey celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this past July. Ben is survived by his wife, Audrey; three sons, Stephen, Michael and Danny LaFever; daughter, Constance Jenkins and son-in-law, Sam Jenkins, of Orono; two grandsons, Joey and Erik LaFever; two granddaughters, Kimberly Stuckey and Melissa Slottke; and two great-granddaughters, Alex and Megan. He will be cremated and buried in the family cemetery of close friends, Don and Barbara Miller, at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
