DEER ISLE – Bernes E. “Jim” Wyman Jr., 76, went to be with the Lord Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Sept. 20, 1929, in Dixmont, the son of Bernes E. and Mary E. (Simpson) Wyman Sr. Jim attended M.C.I. in Pittsfield and the Jet Engine School for United Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Ordinance during the Korean War and served in Germany as an automobile mechanic. Jim worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company testing jet engines for five years. While living and working in Connecticut, he met and married Bernadette Joyce Feb. 20, 1954, together they shared 52 years. In 1959, Jim and Bernadette moved to Deer Isle, where Jim spent 17 years working in management for the state of Maine. Following his state employment, Jim worked for Pearl and Gene Eaton at Eaton’s Exxon Garage in Stonington before going to work for the town of Deer Isle as a bus driver and doing maintenance at the Deer Isle – Stonington High School. He retired in 1994 and since then he had enjoyed trout fishing, working in his strawberry garden, tending his beehive, hunting deer and spending time with his family, to whom he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Jim was a member of the Saunders Memorial Congregational Church in Little Deer Isle, where he served as a trustee, he was a past master of Marine Lodge No. 122, AF & AM in Deer Isle, a past patron of Harborview Chapter No. 136, O.E.S in Deer Isle and was a member of Deer Isle Grange No. 296. In addition to his wife, Bernadette Wyman of Deer Isle, Jim is survived by three children, Deborah Eaton and her husband, Ronald, of Deer Isle, James Wyman and his wife, Michele, of Lamoine and Traci Thompson and her husband, Kyle, of Fountain Valley, Calif.; two granddaughters who “Papa” adored, Katie Van Why and her husband, Adam, and Casey Wyman; a special grandson, Fred Hersom and his wife, Holly; a sister, Rita Janice of Gray; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the Saunders Memorial Congregational Church, 46 Eggemoggin Rd., Little Deer Isle, with the Rev. Harald Smedal, pastor, officiating.
