MARS HILL and MARYLAND Betty Lou (Shaw) Whilden, 74, died Feb. 14, 2004, at her home in Reisterstown, Md., of heart failure. She was born Aug. 16, 1928, in Bridgewater, Conn., the daughter of the late Leslie Shaw and Emily Martin Shaw of Mars Hill. She graduated from Aroostook Central Institute in Mars Hill. She was a skilled bridge player and enjoyed reading. She wrote stories about her girlhood growing up in Maine, which were published in “Yankee Magazine” and “Echoes”. She is survived by five children, Frederick W. Whilden III of Reisterstown, Md., Linda E. Whilden of Baltimore, Md., Susan M. Savage, Woodvine, Md., Katherine A. Whilden, Thurmont, Md., and Sandra E. Casteel, Reisterstown, Md.; a stepmother, Shirley Shaw, of Brewer; a brother, Wesley Shaw, of West Inverness, Fla.; three sisters, JoAnne Ault, of Chipley, Fla., Susan Rocha, of Dedham, and Marjorie Petersen, of Brewer. A memorial service was held Feb. 21, 2004, in Lutherville, Md. The home is where her daughter Katherine is a special needs resident.
