HOULTON – Betty M. Cummings, 74, died Jan. 14, 2007, at a local hospital. She was born March 2, 1932, in Houlton, the daughter of Harold M. Smith and Anna (Lloyd) Smith White. Betty worked many years for Dr. Wilford Virgie, the Aroostook sheriff’s department dispatching, matron for the jail and transporting prisoners. She was proud to be a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Auxiliaries. Betty also served in an active role as officers in the VFW. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed her bowling leagues at the Hill Top Lanes. One of her passions was being at her camp in the Haynesville Woods, enjoying special times with family members and friends, especially Thanksgiving meals after a morning of hunting. Betty was a crack shot and always got a deer. She found beauty and peace being in the woods and watching the river ambling by. There was always laughter and friendship to be found with Betty. An acquaintance once said, “she always had a smile.” Betty is survived by her daughters, Sherry Cates and her husband, Robert, and Debbie Powell; her son, Randee Cummings and his wife, Rose; eight grandchildren, Christopher, Daniel, Seth, Bradley, Jessica, Amanda, Jason and Kimberly; nephew, Robert Cummings; and a special cousin, Joseph Raymond. She was predeceased by her husband, Delmont E. Cummings in 1985; her parents; her stepfather, Gerald White; and her brother, Harold M. Smith Jr. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Dunn Funeral Home with the Rev. David Rowe officiating. Gifts may be made in Betty’s memory to MAP’s, care of Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St., Houlton, ME 04730, “for the many women she helped through difficult times.”
