AUGUSTA and DANFORTH Blanche I. (Tompkins) MacKay, wife of the late Bruce A. MacKay, died Feb. 23, 2005, at an Augusta healthcare facility, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Bridgewater, the daughter of Francis (Hartley) and Cole Tompkins. She taught elementary school for many years in Drew Plantation, Macwahoc and Danforth. Blanche enjoyed her family, friends, and especially children. She gardened, hunted, fished and traveled with Bruce throughout the state. As a member of various organizations, she held many offices in the United Methodist Women, Danforth Garden Club, Nonpareil Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Grand Lake Grange. She was a member of the Danforth Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Mike Thornton of Greenville Jct.; two grandsons and two great-granddaughters, Mike Thornton II, his wife, Jacquelyn and daughters, Kristin and Casey of North Waterboro; Mitch Thornton and his fianc?e, Nicole Casse, of Sangerville. She is survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, including special friends, Phyllis Mailman and Bernice Brown. She was predeceased by her parents, husband and an infant son. A private family interment will be held at a later date in Drew Cemetery, Drew Plantation.
