PHOENIX – Carlene D. Rideout, 78, passed away Aug. 18, 2007, at the Gardiner House, Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix, after a brief, but valiant, battle with brain cancer. She was born July 1, 1929, in Brewer, the only child of Forrest M. and C. June (Erskine) Paine. She graduated from Brewer High School in 1947. She was a life member of R.B. Capen Rebekah Lodge of Augusta, a past president of the Rebekah Assembly of Maine, a member of Somerset Auxiliary No. 26 of Skowhegan, a past president of the Department Association L.A.P.M. of Maine, holding the title of treasurer emeritus of that organization, and a past president of the International Association of Ladies Auxiliaries Patriarchs Militant, serving two terms in that office. She held associate memberships in Arizona Rebekah Lodge No. 1, Charity Rebekah Lodge No. 6 and L.A.P.M. Arizona No. 1, where she was, at the time of her death, serving as treasurer, all located in Phoenix. She was also a member of Phoenix Lodge No. 2 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and of Floral Unified Encampment Lodge No. 2, of Phoenix. She was serving as president of the Rebekah Sunshine Auxiliary associated with Fellowship Towers. Carlene married Richard C. Rideout, June 13, 1959. She worked in the circulation department of the Bangor Daily News before moving to Augusta in 1972. She was employed by the State of Maine, Department of Labor, Employment Security Commission, from which she retired. She was also a member of the Maine State Retirees Association. In March of 1996, Carlene and her daughter relocated to Arizona. Mrs. Rideout was pre-deceased by her parents and her husband. She is survived by a daughter, Cynthia J. Rideout of Phoenix; their Maine coon cat, Misty; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A committal service will be held noon Friday at the Father LeClair Chapel of the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Knowlton, Hewins Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church Street, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carlene’s memory to the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Rose Float, care of Robert Gennaria, chairman, 2107-B Vanderbilt Lane, Redondo Beach, CA 90278.
