ELLSWORTH – Carleton J. Tate, 92, passed away Jan. 14, 2006, in a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born April 26, 1913, son of Clarence and Mabel (Gray) Tate of Bar Harbor. In his early years, Carleton worked on the steamship docks in Bar Harbor and spent winters in Palm Beach, Fla., as a chauffeur. In the 1940’s, he took up the career that became his passion for the rest of his life. He began driving trailer trucks for Harper’s Express of Southwest Harbor and later for Boston & Rockland Transportation. When B&R was purchased by Sanborn’s Express, Carleton was in charge of the Ellsworth terminal and delivered freight in the Ellsworth area. He retired from truck driving in 1973, but always held a fondness for the big trucks. He enjoyed a long and happy retirement with his wife, Jessie (Mitchell), who died two years previously. He was also predeceased by a son, Ralph Tate; and three sisters, Doris, Beulah and Margarette. Carleton is survived by two sons, Michael Tate of Bar Harbor and Clarence Tate of Gardiner; and a daughter, Betty Allen of Mount Desert; a sister-in-law, Glenice Carter of Mount Desert; and two special friends and relatives, Peggy O’Halloran and Alta Tate of Otis. Carleton was proud of his 10 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Ellsworth.
