FORT FAIRFIELD and BAR HARBOR – Phyllis W. Rand Smith, 84, died Thursday evening, Jan. 26, 2006, at a Bar Harbor nursing facility, following a brief illness. She was born June 27, 1921, in Four Falls, N.B., Canada, the daughter of Peter A. and Mary (Clowes) Watson. Phyllis was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1939, and had been a member of the Aroostook Valley Country Club, Fort Fairfield and the former White Bunny Ski Club. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by two husbands, Lester Rand and Richard “Red” Smith; four half brothers, Elwood, George, Peter and Delbert Watson; and one half-sister, Margaret Reynolds Gagnon. She is survived by two sons, Richard Rand of Bar Harbor and Thomas Rand of Truckee, Calif.; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald “Jack” and Mona Watson of Fort Fairfield and Ocala, Fla.; two half sisters, Dorothy Murchison of Perth-Andover, N.B., Canada and Mattie Niles of Connecticut; two grandchildren, Rachel Rand of Portland and Richard Rand of Bar Harbor and Fort Myers, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield, at which time all are welcome to share memories of Phyllis. In lieu of flowers, those who choose may contribute in memory of Phyllis to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086. Arrangements are in the care of the Dorsey Funeral Home, Fort Fairfield.
