PRESQUE ISLE – Cassie Viola Adams Roix, 101, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at the Presque Isle Nursing Home, where she had lived since late August. Cassie was born Sept. 26, 1906, in Upper Kintore, New Brunswick, to Cordie (Cox) and John Adams. Shortly before she turned 11, the family moved to Chapman; they later settled in Presque Isle, where she lived the remainder of her life. Cassie was married to Wallace Roy Roix, March 1, 1924. They were married 48 years, until his death in 1972. She took care of children from her own family and those of others in her home until the age of 65. She always was delighted to hold the newest baby in the family. In the 1940s, Cassie became a citizen of the U.S., because she disliked the process she had to go through each time she crossed the border. She attended the Pentecostal church with her family growing up and maintained a strong faith throughout her life, influencing her own family’s love for God. She faithfully attended Wesleyan Church until her death, and often read her Bible and prayed especially for her family. Cassie was a gifted seamstress, learning to sew for her siblings when she was a teenager. She sewed dresses, suits for her husband, coats, and Pendleton suits for her grandchildren, often without patterns. She also knit, and crochet, making mittens, socks, sweaters, baby outfits, and afghans. She enjoyed making gifts for her family. Another of Cassie’s hobbies was gardening. She had an incredible green thumb, growing beautiful house plants inside, and creating gorgeous flower gardens around the outside of her home. She liked to travel, especially in earlier days, when she could drive herself. At the age of 94, she suffered a stroke, which ended her driving but not her travel. When her beloved sister, Phebe died in September 2004, at the age of 98, Cassie traveled to New Hampshire to say her good-byes personally. She was loved and honored by many families gathered there. Cassie was known for her love of potatoes, sometimes cooking them in various ways for all three meals. And in true hardy Aroostook fashion, she enjoyed winter with its snow and cold. She lived independently until several months after her 100th birthday, but loved nothing more than being surrounded by family. Her family took delight in celebrating her, planning particularly special gatherings for her 90th and 100th birthdays. She will be greatly missed by those who deeply loved her and whom she dearly loved. Cassie and her husband had five children, Linwood and his wife, Esther, of Millinocket, Elwood and his wife, Ann, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Barbara Burnett and her husband, Francis, of Presque Isle, Opal Marquis and her husband, Roger, of Presque Isle, and Pat McKay and her husband, Peter, of Beverly, Mass. Cassie has 20 living grandchildren and one deceased, 46 living great-grandchildren and one deceased and 31 great-great-grandchildren. She had six sisters and three brothers, all whom predeceased her. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Presque Isle Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Larry Palmer officiating. Friends may call noon until time of service at the church.
