BANGOR – Charles A. Waters, 70, passed away Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at a Bangor hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 11, 1935, in Newark, N.J., the son of the late Charles A. and Gertrude L. (Uibelhoer) Waters. Charlie was a graduate of Nutley, New Jersey High School. He continued his education at The University of Maine in Orono earning a BS degree in Science and Wildlife Management. Charlie then earned a MS degree in Science and Zoology. During college, he was an active member of The Society of Sigma Xi Fraternity. Following the completion of his college career, he shared his knowledge in these areas by becoming a gifted teacher of Science and Math in Rockville Center, N.Y., Lynbrook, N.Y., and Scotch Plains, N.J., up to his retirement in 1993. In addition to his teaching, he enjoyed coaching track and field especially the Javelin Event. Charlie touched so many lives throughout his career as it was evident in the awards he received. In 1973 he received the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers and in 1991 he received the George Olmsted Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching at Williams College in Massachusetts. Charlie had many publications in books, leaflets and magazines of his dedicated research in the wildlife field. Charlie served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps for six years. He had a special love, knowledge and appreciation for all of nature especially in birds. He also enjoyed hunting, hiking and fishing. Charlie was also an accomplished artist having painted several nature scenes and trout and birds scenes. He is survived by two brothers, Roger Waters and David Waters; sister, Judy Hartman; very special friends, Joe Dana, Amanda Brayson and their children, Kyrin Dana, Jayden Dana and Logan Dana, who thought of Charlie as a Grandfather, many students and staff that he met throughout his career; several friends at the Veazie Salmon Club; and friends at the Penobscot Nation with whom he had an appreciation for their culture.
