ORONO – Charles S. “Charlie” Moose, 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 21, 2005, at a Bangor hospital, after suffering a stroke at his home. He was born May 31, 1916, in Quakertown, Pa., the son of Harry and Anna (Weirbach) Moose. Charlie was a World War II Veteran having flown 33 pathfinder missions over Europe in the B-17 and B-24. Charlie’s ability to speak “everyday” German was noted when he received a medal for successfully ordering the surrender of a German submarine. Charlie was known for more than 30 years to the citizens of Orono as the Cota Fuel oilburner man they entrusted with their homes whether they were home or away. He was also a master electrician, plumber and oil burner technician. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (DeGrasse) Moose, in 1999. He is survived by his son, John “Jack” Moose and his wife, Sylvia, of Orono; a sister, Mildred Martin and her husband, Ken, of Quakertown, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Francis “Bud” DeGrasse and his wife, Alma, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; brother-in-law, Bob DeGrasse and his wife, Val, of Hampden; sister-in-law, Theresa DeGrasse of Bradley; nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment with military honors will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice in the memory of the generous man we all knew Charlie to be.
