BANGOR and BERLIN, N.H. – Charline Hawkensen Ferren, 85, died Dec. 5, 2005, in Bangor. She was born Feb. 26, 1920, in Berlin, N.H., the daughter of Hans and Dora (Paulsen) Hawkensen. She resided in Berlin and Jefferson, N.H. most of her life. Charline graduated from Berlin High School in 1938 and Plymouth Teachers College in 1942. She taught high school business subjects in Lincoln, Littleton and Berlin, N.H. She was married to Roland N. Ferren for 45 years until he died in 1992. Her brother, Lloyd W. Hawkensen, also predeceased her in 1987. Charline was a wonderful homemaker and cook who loved to entertain family and friends. She also liked to travel and especially enjoyed a trip with Elderhostel to the Scandinavian countries. Other hobbies that she enjoyed included, knitting, quilting, playing the piano, reading and feeding the wildlife in her yard. Surviving family includes one daughter, Paula Moore and her husband, Donald, of Orono; stepgrandson, Carl Moore and wife, Sarah, of New York City, N.Y.; nieces, Ruth Hawkensen and her daughter, Elana, of Stratham, N.H., Carol Rahim and her husband, Faruq and children, Sahar, Safa and Sakinah, of Skokie, Ill. and Heidi Hawkensen and husband, Parker Uhlman, of Thornton, N.H.; sister-in-law, Sandra Hawkensen of Hill, N.H. and her children, Robert and Charles Estes and Kelley Estes Filley. Remaining special cousins include, Jennie Brown of Gorham, N.H., Joan Riff and her husband, Donald, of Berlin, N.H., Gail Mackenzie and Jim of Dublin, Ohio, Leon Hawkinson of Berlin, N.H., Nancy Winsor and her husband, Gordon, of Jefferson, N.H., Virginia Heyl of Agawam, Mass., Barbara Bull and her husband, Bill, of Burlington, Vt. A memorial service with refreshments following, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Berlin, N.H. Charline was a life-long lover of and advocate for animals.
