BANGOR – Chet Kolb, 82, passed away May 11, 2005, after a brief illness, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Milford, Mass. Chet graduated from West Orange High School in New Jersey. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy stationed in New Caledonia. Over the years, mostly doing accounting work, he has lived in NYC, Cape Cod, upstate New York and Connecticut. Finally settling in Maine, he did volunteer work for the Bangor Symphony, Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine, and the visitor information desk at the airport, and worked as a school crossing guard. Chet was a man of simple means whose passion inevitably came into play in his love of family and friends, beauty and art, fine food and spirits, and his favorite operas. His passion also came forth in his memories of being in the Navy, recollections of old movies, watching the N.E. Patriots, completing the New York Times crossword puzzle, current politics, and his anger at drivers speeding through school crossings. In his passing Chet leaves behind two daughters, Kristina Beckman of Half Moon Bay, Calif., Pamela Dunmeyer of Barnstable, Mass.; former wife, Lida Briggs of Yarmouthport, Mass.; sister, Letitia Stephenson; sister-in-law, Louise Longhurst; cousin, Nancy Ridley; and loyal friends, Gary Edwards, Chris Olsen, and Sam Rogers. A private family service will be held at a later date. Contributions in Chet’s memory can be made to a charity of ones choice.
