MONTICELLO – Clarence E. Hersey, 101, passed away Dec. 8, 2003, at his home in Monticello. He was born Sept. 12, 1902, at Fort Fairfield, the son of Wesley and Cassie (Hamilton) Hersey. Clarence had been a resident of Monticello most of his life. Being the oldest citizen in Monticello, Clarence was presented with the Boston Post Gold Cane in 1996. His daughter, Carol McKenney has lived with him since his wife, Florence, passed away Sept. 21, 1990, giving him special care. He was owner and operator of Hersey’s Cedar Mill for 30 years, then worked as a carpenter until his retirement. He attended the Monticello Calvary Pentecostal Church. Music was a great interest of his, just two weeks ago, he sat down to his organ and entertained himself playing his favorite hymns. Clarence is survived by three sons, Norville and Philip Hersey, both of Monticello, Douglas Hersey of Dover, N.H.; four daughters, Geraldine Graham and her husband, Elwood, of Houlton, Iris Woodward and her husband, George, of Jonesport, Louise Carey of Florida, Carol McKenney of Monticello; 33 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Alma Gatulis and her husband, William, of Foxboro, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Florence; two brothers, Ira and Paul Hersey; three sisters, Laura Stitham, Mabel Nicholson and Clara Britton; two sons, Newell and Francis Hersey; and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Brown. Friends may call at the Dunn Funeral Home, Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George Woodward officiating. Spring interment will be in the Littleton Cemetery.
